5/29/2017 - Review - Cubist (2014)

I am a big fan of art, and a big fan of dice. So naturally CUBIST was bound to come into my collection at some point. So hay let's (try) to build a gallery!

In Cubist, you and your opponents are architects competing to build a grand and inspiring new Modern Art Museum including its interior sculptures or “installations.” Aptly enough, your building materials are cubes, or more precisely, dice!

On each turn you roll two dice and place them in your studio as raw materials for your cubist sculptures. From there you position these dice to complete commissioned installations for the museum. Dice with identical numbers can be stacked on top of one another to give your sculpture elevation and grandeur. Dice with adjacent numbers go next to one another to construct unconventional footprints of modernism. You can press your luck by committing to a certain risky commission—hoping that no one else will complete it first—or play it safe by locking up your dice for later use.

You can also use your dice to enlist the aid of masters of modern art like Juan Gris, Franz Marc and Olga Rozanova. Each installation you complete allows you to contribute dice to the building of the Museum itself. You will have to sculpt cleverly but quickly to get the new Museum named after you!

Tyler picked the blue dice (he always picks blue) and for contrast i picked the yellow dice (or gold,
they look kind of golden). Tyler is quick to make the first instillation and places his die accordingly and we start to pick up the pace of the game rather quickly. In no time it becomes quite obvious that the gallery is not going to be built and who ever scores the fifth install is going to win. Tyler notices that i am going for the five point install and does the same thing and we are battling for the install that has a 4 die high piece in it. I roll my dice and say "Game over" needing a 4 and.....Don't roll one. That would have been the best if i rolled it and called my Babe Ruth type shot. Well this is the game for sure knowing my track record at these things. Tyler needs a two and.... does not get it! That was a pleasant surprise. I roll the dice one at a time this time and roll a two......and a four! After adding up the score i come away with the 3 point victory.

Dad:
"The art is great and the concept is really well thought out. The game play is a little deeper than blueprints which is a plus for sure. The artist cards that manipulate the dice rolls served me way better than the cards that just granted me a specific numbered die, i wish that more of the cards were + & - the rolled dice. When i play it again i will add in the Attic expansion that i have for sure because i think it would dramatically change your strategy for building installs."
6.5/10

Tyler:
"I like that your build the gallery and the installs with the dice, it reminded me of blueprints. Sometimes it takes a really long time to get the dice you need. Your kinda stuck waiting on a specific die if your really close to finishing an install."
