Review: Risk: Star Wars Edition (2015)

This Risk: Star Wars Edition game lets players re-create the dramatic final moments of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Featuring gameplay for 2 or 4 players across a TIE fighter-shaped gameboard, players can determine the fate of the Star Wars universe through 3 concurrent (yet distinct) battles. Choose to play as either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire, and use the classic Risk dice to control characters and ships. The object of the game is to defend or destroy the Death Star. Being 42 years old, I have a special place in my heart for Star Wars, and especially Episodes III - VI. I, like most of us our age, have played Risk many times, and I have heard great things about this game, so I figured I would pick it up and give it a shot, considering it is widely compared to Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit. In the end, I felt that the game was okay. The dice combat is only one side attacking, so there is no chance of defense. I do like fighting on 3 fronts, as that does add a great depth of strategy, but it seems like the Rebel side has way too many ships. I just let Tyler keep attacking my ships, and I just kept trying to take down the shields so I could blow up the Death Star and win, because in order to beat the Death Star, you only need to get one hit on it after the shield is down. I think the game would be better if the shield track was a little harder. On the shield defense track, you have to roll the dice and get even or above the number printed, and you get to roll five dice. The Empire can put +1 on them to make it harder, but there needed to be more 5's on it. As far as the Darth Vader vs. Luke Skywalker aspect of the game, it's only there to try to gain bonus cards if you defeat your opponent, which never proved to be a huge advantage in the 3 games we played.  In the end, it is not a game that will make the shelf.

I thought it was a good idea to have Star Wars Risk, but it was unfair for the Imperial side because the Rebels have too many ships, and all the Rebels have to do is break the shield system and attack the Death Star. It was a lot more work for the Imperials, and the only way for the Imperials to win is if the Rebels roll badly. Also, Kylo Ren is on the box and has nothing to do with the game at all. Kylo is my favorite character in the new movies, and he is just on the box to sell more copies of the game.
