The story I am going to tell, however, is when I asked my non-gamer wife about going to the convention. I wanted to go to Origins this year, and I knew that due to my work schedule, I would only be able to go for a single day. I had all of this worked out in my head, as I figured out the 5-hour drive, that my BFF Mike was going to go with me if I went, and how much money I thought I needed to go. I worked at all of this without ever explaining to my wife what it was. So, here is the conversation from the car ride back from an in-law's dinner a few months ago:
Me: "Honey, I really want to go to Origins."
Wife: "Where?"
Me: "Origins, it's in Columbus, Ohio in June."
Wife: "Why don't you just go to Wegmans?" (Local grocery store)
Me: "What?"
Wife: "Why would you drive all the way to Columbus? I can just go to the store for you."
Me: "What?"
Wife: "It just seems like a long way to drive for oranges. Are they special oranges? Are
they only grown in June?"
Me: "Not oranges, Origins. It's a boardgame convention."
======================================================
It's at this point that my children bust out in laughter, and as my wife and I. We now actually call the game convention Oranges, and will probably do so the rest of my life!
