Review - Heroes (2015) - Lion Games

Sometimes, games get passed over because of a title that does not catch your eye, or that just sounds kind of generic. When I saw the title of this game, it didn't grab me, but the mechanics seemed interesting. and if there's one thing I'm addicted to, it's trying new game mechanics.

Heroes is a dynamic real-time game for 2-4 players, in which players become true heroes of a magical fantasy world, possessing great powers related to different elements: air, water, fire, etc. and leading powerful fantasy armies. They send their creatures — such as dragons, elementals, ifrits, hydras or gnomes — to a battle against the opponent's troops. The aim of the game is to defeat the opponent's hero and army.

In each battle you will summon the mighty forces of nature and the beasts which were born from them. You will chose on your own which of them will accompany you in tides of battle.Using magic dice you will cast spells or dispel those belonging to your enemies, activate your foes or learn new magic incantations. Perceptivness, reflexes and a well-thought-out strategy are the keys to victory.

One of key tasks for each player is to properly use of any cards that he own and creatures that he controls. He must quickly analyze scores on his dice because only given sets of symbols will allow him to use abilities and cast spells.

Dice = Power. First you get the roll, then you get the power. Then you get the weemon.

Tyler took the Voynaroth (red) and I took Selya (Purple). We started with the standard armies, and right off the bat, Ty's Red Dragon killed my Griffon, and from there it was all downhill rather quickly. Next, my Storm Dragon fell. Then, he hit me with a meteor spell and Selya started taking damage. And he played his special ability, which made me take damage every time I rolled a fire symbol. I did manage to finally take out the Red Dragon and fight back a little, because Ty did not have any spell cards, but once he got some spells, that spelled the end of me. I was defeated, and Tyler had 13 health left. Seriously, when your son attacks you with a Red Dragon and a meteor, you don't have much of a chance.

Ty:

"I love the Red Dragon, he has a powerful attack and strong defense."

Dad:

"If you don't like the element of luck in your games, you should definitely pass on this one. A lot of what you plan comes down to if you can roll what you need faster than your opponent. I thought it was a unique take on fantasy combat games. I like the dice aspect, because it forced me to adjust what I was doing mid-roll and stop, so Tyler did not have a chance to get what he needed."
3.5/5

Ty:

"I love that you can build your own armies and you don't have to just pick the default army. This adds a lot of replayabilty to the game. I do like that you use the dice to active the cards. I don't like that you need to play a spell to attack with a creature but i understand that you need to do that to balance the game."
